Vancouver's Art Scene
Forget Paris, London and New York. Vancouver artists are not trying to compete with these international art hubs. They are not even playing at the same game. Vancouver art scene is innovative, because - at the moment - it is not an answer to. Vancouver art scene is doing what he wants, not from fear of coercion, not because of external influences and not even to appease financiers with a view to financial incentives. The best art is probably covered by a channeling of inner vision to something that is unique, genuine and fully representative of the artist and his /her intent and state of being. Vancouver is pure art.
If you want to see a collection of impressionist paintings, go to Paris (although we were aware of this kind exhibition of art in Vancouver occasionally). In contrast, works by local artists such as Jeff Wall and Marianne Nicolson elegantly privileges are awarded only to deserving and grateful Vancouverites - and our beloved tourists.
With such a thriving art scene with exhibitions mounted simultaneously in dozens of galleries around the lower mainland, the one true joy is the degree of modesty with which many of Vancouver artists, curators and gallery owners present their work. It seems plausible, though not easy, that many of our local talents can develop Manhattan, big egos to accompany their big, bold pieces. Fortunately, these were not, and hopefully not the case.
It remains, in this writer believes that the humble and modest nature of our local art scene is his blessing, second only to the quantity and quality of the exhibits shown in our fair city, and I for one, am proud , Access to such a vibrant array of world-class art in my own backyard.
